10,000 rubber ducks to race at Jungle Rapids Friday

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — More than 10,000 rubber ducks will be racing in Wilmington Friday.

The Coastal Horizons Center will hold its second annual Coastal Duck Derby at Jungle Rapids.

The event raises money for open house which is Wilmington’s only emergency shelter for abused, neglected and at-risk children who need a temporary safe place.

Development Director Jamie Thompson said it is a fun night the whole community can connect to.

“Rubber ducks are nostalgic for most of us and you can’t really look at one and not smile, so we’re using rubber ducks to raise money for children that really need our help and without the funds we raise with the coastal duck derby, we wouldn’t be able to do what we’re able to do everyday here,” Thompson said.

Thompson said the ducks are $5 each and they still need to sell about 5,000 to reach their goal. She said the ducks travel around the country from race to race.
