101 Mobility brings Halloween to special needs students

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) –- The ability to dress up for Halloween is something you might not think twice about, but it’s a reality for the special needs students at Codington Elementary.

To make sure those kids look just as spooky, or as dainty as all the other kids on Halloween, 101 Mobility creates special costumes for them.

For the staff at the company October is more like Christmas.

“We look forward to this day probably more than any other day of the year,” said Tammy Harrell.

Just like Santa’s elves, this team starts preparing months before the big day to make sure every last detail is perfect.

“Those things really make the costumes pop,” said Ryan Price.

Aside from working their magic with the costumes, the staff at 101 Mobility also has to make sure the day-to-day at the office runs smoothly too.

“This is kind of a project that we’ve taken on that is outside of regular duties,” said Price.

In between answering phone calls and keeping up with emails, the team finds time to pick up spray paint and hot glue guns.

“We get so enveloped into making them that you kind of always lose track of them. Every time you get one it’s like ‘Oh that’s our favorite.’ Then we’ll build another one, and it’s like ‘Nope, nope, nope, that’s our favorite,'” said Price.

Despite the running around and all the hard work, each person is more humbled than the next to give this opportunity to the students.

“It is a gift to us basically,” said Harrell

But these costumes are more than just a gift.

“It’s all about the smiles on their faces,” said Ben McCoy.

Thursday the students will parade around the school in their new costumes for the third year.

This year 101 Mobility has been working on Red Barron plane, a cupcake, the Queen of Hearts, a bumblebee, and a shark diver’s cage just to name a couple of the costumes.

After the parade staff helps families transport the masterpieces to their homes so the kids and go trick-or-treating in them.
