19-year-old arrested, accused in deadly stabbing
NEW HANOVER COUNTY (WWAY) — A 19-year-old man is charged with first-degree murder after a man is killed during a breaking and entering.
According to a news release from the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, Gary Sikes, 19, broke into the home of Edwin Taylor Boyer, 84, early Thursday morning.
While Sikes was allegedly stealing items from the home on Selkirk Court, Boyer woke up and got into a confrontation with Sikes. The sheriff’s office said Sikes stabbed Boyer multiple times and left.
Thursday afternoon, deputies received a call about a suspicious vehicle located in the 7000 block of Thurgood Road.
Deputies discovered the vehicle belonged to Boyer. Deputies then went to Boyer’s home to complete a welfare check where they found evidence of a breaking & entering. They found Boyer’s body inside.
While checking the history of the vehicle, investigators discovered that it has been pulled over earlier that day for passing a stopped school bus.
At that time the driver of the vehicle was Gary Sikes III and he was issued a ticket for passing a stopped school bus and no operator’s license.
Detectives found Sikes at his home. During the investigation it was determined that Sikes was responsible for Boyer’s murder.
Sikes appeared in court on Friday morning. He is charged with first degree murder, first degree burglary, and first degree felony larceny. He is being held without bond.
