New Hanover County murderer denied parole

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A woman convicted in 1990 for murdering a man in New Hanover County has been denied parole.

Dreamer Lee Cottle Alston shot and killed Pernell Dewayne Joe in the summer of 1989. Based on sentencing laws at the time, the state had to consider paroling Alston, who is now 57.

The Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission says in addition to being denied parole, Alston has also been suspended from consideration for Mutual Agreement Parole Program (MAPP), which is a scholastic and vocational program. Her case will be reviewed for parole purposes again on or about Aug. 1, 2018.
