Woods fire shuts down Brunswick County roads; shelter open
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A large woods fire is causing some traffic issues in Brunswick County and could threaten homes.
Earlier this afternoon, the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office said NC 211 at the intersections of Clemmons Road and Midway Road was closed due to the fire. Later they added the following intersections to the list of closures:
- Midway Road and Green Lewis Road
- Benton Road and Gilbert Road
- Midway Road and Gilbert Road
- Drivers cannot access Midway Road from NC 211
Brunswick County Fire Marshal Scott Garner said county crews are protecting some structures and forestry crews are trying to get fire lines around the fire. At this point, though, there have been no evacuations ordered. According to a county spokeswoman, though, if residents who live in the path of the fire feel threatened, they may go ahead and evacuate to Antioch Baptist Church on Midway Road for shelter.
Drivers are urged to avoid the area.
