WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — There are plans to change the look of a heavily traveled road in Wilmington.
The DOT discussed a project that would affect a large portion of Carolina Beach Road. At tonight’s public meeting, representatives from the project study team shared information and answered questions.
The proposed plan is to install a grassy median on Carolina Beach Road from Shipyard Blvd. to Burnett Blvd.
The city said there is money for additional landscaping and aesthetic enhancements.
The DOT said the goal is to improve safety for cars and pedestrians, as well as relieve traffic congestion.
“The median will be 17 and a half feet wide and will help improve safety along the corridor,” Project Manager Ben Crawford said. “We hope to do that within the existing right of way limits.”
Crawford added that this is not a widening project. This is a safety project.
Construction is not planned to begin until 2021.
