Memorial at intersection of fatal crash

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) –Friday marked what would have been Mason Richardson’s third birthday.

Richardson is the two year old who was killed in a car crash earlier this week.

Friday night Mason’s mom told us they are having a hard time coping with his untimely death.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office says that Jonathan Alexander Hayes, the man police say is responsible for the crash, has been arrested and put in jail 13 times prior to his latest charge for second degree murder.

On November 1, Wilmington police say Jonathan Alexander Hayes crashed his truck into this car killing 2 year-old Mason Richardson and sending his mother Alexandria Williams and brother to the hospital .

A memorial stands in the little boy’s memory.

The memorial constructed here by the intersection of Independence Blvd. and Oleander Dr. has a balloon with birthday messages on it for what would have been Mason’s third birthday.

The balloon reads ‘I miss you’ with hand written warm wishes for mason and it’s surrounded by flowers, stuffed animals, and a cross.

Mason’s aunt created this GoFundMe page to help pay for funeral expenses so far it has raised nearly $20,000 of its $25,000 goal.

Mason’s funeral is set for Saturday at 11 a.m. at the New Covenant Holiness Church on Dawson Street in Wilmington.
