Loved ones remember life of slain teen

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Family and friends gathered in Southport to say their goodbyes to Hoggard High School student Raymond Kain Thursday.

Kain’s body was found on Sebrell Avenue last Thursday. At first 911 callers thought it may have been a hit and run but Wilmington Police later determined it was a homicide.

Kain’s grandmother, Mary Kay Kain says life will never be the same without him.

“Ray Ray was a loving, kindhearted kid who would do anything for anybody. He saw the best in everyone. He refused to believe that anyone was bad,” Kain said.

U.S. Marshals arrested 17 year old Tyler Yee Tuesday. Yee is charged with first degree murder. Kain’s grandmother says the two were friends.

“I would always ask about his friends. Ray Ray what type of kid is this? ‘Oh Nana he’s a nice kid.’ Would Nana like this kid Ray Ray? That was always the question. Would Nana like him. ‘Oh yes Nana you’d like him, he’s a nice kid, a good kid Nana. A good kid,'” Kain said.

It is a shocking situation Kain’s grandmother says she can not accept.

“In my heart. I know this was no accident,” Kain said.

Family members describe Kain as a typical teenager. He loved hanging with friends and family, playing video games, drawing, riding his bike and ROTC. His grandmother says he was a good man, a forgiving man.

“I bet you if he could come down right now he would say ‘that’s okay, he was a good kid he didn’t mean it.’ I know he would. I know my grandson would forgive this kid. I won’t, I won’t,” Kain said.

Kain was cremated, his family will take his ashes to Pittsburgh for a memorial service with other family members on Sunday.

As for Yee, he is in jail under a $1M bond.
