WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The basketball world is focused on the NCAA Championship game tonight. Meanwhile a man who is part of that game is the focus of Seahawk Nation.
“He stood out from the rest, because he said I want this job. I want to come to UNCW,” Trustee Wilma Daniels said.
McGrath has worked under Hall of Famer Roy Williams for 18 years, including the last 14 in Chapel Hill. He also played and coached for Williams at Kansas.
“(McGrath) is extremely intelligent and very organized,” Williams said Friday a day ahead of UNC’s Final Four win over Oregon in Arizona. “He has a passion for the game. Loves working with young people, does see the big picture all the time. I do think he has every skill you would want a perspective coach to have, if and when that happens.”
McGrath, who is helping prepare the Tar Heels for tonight’s National Championship match-up against Gonzaga, has not been made available to reporters to talk about the UNCW job, which opened when Kevin Keatts left for NC State last month.
“The Seahawk nation is very excited about it,” UNCW Chancellor Zito Sartarelli said. “This is going to be a great year.”
