Wilmington police investigating officer-involved shooting on N. Front St.


WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police are investigating after a man was hospitalized with a gunshot wound after an encounter with a Wilmington police officer in downtown Wilmington.

It happened around 1:30 p.m. on N. Front Street near the post office by Chop’s Deli.

Wilmington Police spokeswoman Linda Thompson says someone told a police officer that a man was walking around the area with a gun.

A short time later, witnesses told police they heard gunshots and saw the suspect running towards the New Hanover County Library.

A sheriff’s deputy at the library spotted the suspect and saw him bleeding from the face with a gun in his hand. The deputy took him into custody. Law enforcement interviewed several people at the scene.

EMS took the suspect to the hospital. No one else got hurt.

The State Bureau of Investigations has been called in to investigate the officer involved shooting. WPD says they will release more information as it becomes available.
