Corning celebrates 1 billionth km of optical fiber
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Corning Incorporated celebrated a big milestone at its facility right here in the Port City Thursday.
The company celebrated the delivery of its 1 billionth kilometer of optical fiber.
Its optical fiber facility in Wilmington was the first in the world and is still one of the world’s largest.
Corning invented the first low-loss optical fiber in 1970, which helped launch the age of optical communications.
The product allowed for more data to be shared and ultimately transformed how we communicate.
