WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Just in time for holiday shopping, one area Walmart is introducing new technology.
The Walmart Supercenter on Sigmon Road is the first in Wilmington to debut a Walmart pickup tower.
These 16-foot tall structures function like high-tech vending machines and can fulfill a customer’s online order in less than a minute.
To use the pickup tower, customers simply choose items on Walmart.com and select the pickup option at checkout.
When the item arrives at the local store, an associate loads it into the pickup tower and the customer retrieves it by scanning a bar code sent to their smartphone.
“We had our first two customers and they were definitely surprised and excited,” Walmart E-Commerce Team Leader Amy Davis said. “The second customer had two orders and she really couldn’t believe how fast and how easy it was to retrieve you know both of them in less than a minute.”
Walmart said its pickup towers are the latest example of the store’s commitment to digital acceleration and innovation.
