Sunset Beach Police arrest Hardees armed robbery suspect

SUNSET BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The suspect wanted for robbing the Hardees on Seaside Road SW in Sunset Beach back in September is now in custody.

Sunset Beach Police Chief Ken Klamar said in a news release that David Ashley Bates, Sr., 46, is charged with the following:

Robbery with a dangerous weapon, 2 counts
2nd Degree kidnapping, 2 counts
Possession of a firearm by a felon
Assault by pointing a gun, 2 counts
Communicating threats

Police say on September 22, officer responded to armed robbery around 4 a.m. A masked man entered the fast food restaurant with a gun. He demanded cash from the employees and then forced them into the cooler at gunpoint. No one got hurt.

Police say the SBI processed evidence collected at the scene.  DNA was found on one piece of evidence that belonged to Bates. Police say the DNA, along with other evidence collected at the scene, linked Bates to the crime.

Sunset Beach Police, with assistance from Wilmington Police and the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Task Force arrested Bates yesterday.

He is in the Brunswick County Jail on a $1,000,000 bond.
