New Hanover Co. rapist could get paroled nearly 40 years later
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A man convicted of rape in New Hanover County nearly 38 years ago could soon be granted parole.
72-year-old Shellman Hughes was convicted of first degree rape and first degree sexual offense in May of 1980. He received a life sentence.
The state’s current sentencing law eliminates parole for crimes committed on or after October 1, 1994.
The North Carolina Post Release Supervision and Parole Commission can investigate and parole offenders sentenced under previous guidelines.
