WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington is making more room for visitors.
City leaders met Friday morning downtown to break ground on a new $30 million hotel.
The new Aloft hotel will be located next to the Coastline Conference and Events Center on Nutt Street and add 125 more rooms for travelers.
Leaders says travel and tourism are the biggest economic drivers in the county.
Planners hope the hotel’s close proximity to the convention center will attract more programs and events.
The hotel will feature a bar named WXYZ, rooftop dining and work and meeting space.
“[The hotel] will have enough room for their delegates, so having more rooms within close proximity to that facility is really important for maximizing economic impact in that convention center,” President of Wilmington Downtown Incorporated Ed Wolverton said.
The project is expected to be completed by the summer 2020.
