WAKE COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — McCrae Dowless has been bonded out in Wake County.
He’s charged with obstructing justice related to what the state says was an unlawful ballot gathering scheme.
Dowless was being held under a $30,000 secured bond. He faces three felony indictment counts of obstruction of justice including charges of possessing absentee ballots.
The charges came less than a week after the state elections board decided Dowless’s work on behalf of Republican Mark Harris, starting with the 2018 primary, tainted the GOP candidate’s November victory in the 9th Congressional District.
All of this related to his vote gathering efforts in May 2016 and the early parts of last years election. It’s the man who bonded him out today however that’s the story, Bladen County commissioner Ray Britt.
“Our county, Bladen County, has been tainted by this process,” said Britt to reporters as Dowless walked out of the Wake County Detention Center.
Britt says he wants to begin the process to have him and other county leaders speak with state officials about how the investigation, hearing, and decision by the state board of elections damaged the county’s reputation.
“With him being out, we can have legal people contacting him to get to the bottom of the true source of what has been going on with elections in Bladen County for a long time,” said Britt.
Britt footing the bill for the bond comes less than a week after he shared with WWAY’s Andrew James a piece of his conversation he had with Dowless months ago.
“I’ll tell you exactly what I told him in front of my son I said, ‘McCrae I’m going to tell you like I told my son, if you have done something wrong, step up and accept the consequences and go on with it’,” said Britt in the showroom of his furniture store in Elizabethtown.
Dowless along with four others faces charges related to the 2016 election and May 2018 primary according to the Wake County DA. Dowless speaking exclusively to our Charlotte sister station after being released.
“The truth will prevail,” said Dowless.
Dowless will be back in court next month.
