24-hour vigil to support police

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — In light of the weekend shooting that ended in the murders of two New York Police officers, one local man is literally standing up for the Cape Fear’s police departments.

Farris Leonard took to social media Monday to get the community together to thank our officers for doing what they do. Leonard started his vigil 6 p.m. Monday outside of the Pender County Courthouse in Burgaw. He plans to stay for 24 hours straight.

“Without law enforcement doing the jobs that they do, our community would be lawless,” Leonard said. “It would be difficult for us to just go around and do what we normally want to do and we take for granted.”

The vigil will conclude with a special program at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Leonard wants the community to come out and recognize everything that the law enforcement officers do for us.
