Sheriff recognized for veteran support
CASTLE HAYNE, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon received the Patriot Award to recognize the department’s efforts to support military personnel today.
The award is given by the Department of Defense.
“It’s an absolute honor for me, something that I will absolutely treasure,” said McMahon. “I so support our military, and I’m so thankful for what our military sacrifices for us to have our freedoms.”
The department supports its active duty members with flexible schedules, family care and time off surrounding deployment. Deputy Eliot Suggs is one of 20 members of the sheriff’s office who actively serves. He’s also a member of the National Guard.
“People are motivated by having an employer that’s willing to support you and your efforts,” said Suggs.
Suggs added that it can be difficult serving dual roles, but he is glad to have the support from the sheriff’s office.
