50 or more layoffs as Philips lighting plant in Burgaw closes

PENDER COUNTY, NC (StarNews) — The Philips Electronics plant in Burgaw will close by Sept. 1 with at least 50 job losses, the lighting manufacturer said in a notice filed with the state last week.

The company filed its notice to comply with the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, which in part compels companies that are closing plants to provide public notice if layoffs involve 50 or more workers.

Company officials could not be reached late Monday for comment.
