2 officers, 4 inmates hurt in jail brawl
DURHAM — Authorities are expected to release details of a fight at the Durham County Jail in which two detention officers and four inmates were injured.
Capt. Ricky Buchanan, spokesman for the Durham County Sheriff’s Office, said inmates in one of the jail’s pods refused to be locked back in Saturday night and assaulted the detention officer on duty.
The sheriff’s office is investigating and said it would not release names or additional information until Monday.
The Durham County Detention Facility opened in the summer of 1996 with 576 single cells. The sheriff’s office Web site said that since its opened, 160 bunk beds have been added in some cells to increase the facility’s capacity to 736.
