Parents open to Spanish Immersion program move

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Monday night parents had another chance to get information about Spanish Immersion.

Back in December the New Hanover County School Board voted to allow the Spanish Immersion program to be moved from Forest Hills Elementary School to the Gregory School of Science, Mathematics and Technology.

Previously, parents of students from both schools spoke out against the move for different reasons but Monday night many more parents were receptive to the program expanding.

Michelle Williams, a Gregory parents, said her daughter is in kindergartner and she is excited about learning to speak Spanish. Williams said she is happy her children have this opportunity, despite having a lot of questions in the beginning.

“I think for the most part the immersion program really wasn’t the problem. It was how it was presented,” said Williams. “It was lacking a lot of details for us to really understand and grasp it, but overall as we get more and more used to it, we get a better understanding.”

The actual transition will begin this summer.
