Gas leak causes evacuations in Castle Hayne nieghborhood

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Six homes were evacuated in a neighborhood off of Castle Hayne Road because of a gas leak Monday afternoon.

The New Hanover County fire department said there was a valve malfunction at a nearby natural gas substation.

The county fire department was called to a neighborhood at the intersection if Palmetto road and Victoria Drive around 3 p.m.

Officials said someone who lives in the neighborhood called about the gas leak.

Homes were evacuated while the Piedmont Natural Gas workers looked for the issue.

People were allowed back into their homes about a hour and half later.
