Brunswick County commissioners allow school funding for coal ash removal

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The plan to remove coal ash from the South Brunswick Middle School playing fields is moving forward.

A spokeswoman with the school system said the county commission has approved $475,000 of the school system’s money be released to remove the coal ash.

Now the school system is waiting for the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to approved the school’s remedial action plan.

The commissioner also approved funding for South Brunswick High School’s drainage system and parking lot work that’ll cost $220,000.
