31 NC students to participate in Poetry Out Loud

GREENSBORO, NC (AP) — Thirty-one high school students from across North Carolina will participate in a program in Greensboro that combines slam poetry, spoken word and theater for a chance to compete for a $20,000 prize.

The students will compete Saturday in Poetry Out Loud, a program funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. The competition will be held at locations around downtown. The finals will be held Saturday afternoon at the Greensboro Historical Museum.

The winner receives $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for the national championship, which will be held May 13-15. The state winner’s school receives $500 to purchase poetry books. The runner-up receives $100 with his or her school getting $200 for buying poetry books. The national winner receives a $20,000 prize.
