Winds cause flight delays and cancellations

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Tornado watches and warnings throughout Wednesday changed some plans for many people across the area. Local schools got out early, leaving parents to scramble and some airline passengers never got out of the area at all!

For air travelers there was a lot of sitting and waiting at the Wilmington International Airport as winds forced multiple cancellations and delays.

Gary Broughton, airport deputy director, said there were about 6 cancelled American Airlines flights to Charlotte, Philadelphia and LaGuardia because of that wind shear.

“Our primary issue out of Wilmington has been wind shear,” said Broughton. “Especially with the way the wind is blowing and what’s happening about the country I think there are going to be a lot of flights affected.”

With the windy weather whipping a kink into travel plans, travelers like Jean Acome are making due.

“Traveling is fun, I love to travel, it doesn’t disturb me that much,” said Acome.

Audra Tasson said her flight kept getting pushed back and she would have preferred it just be canceled.

“I was hoping they would just cancel it instead of waiting at the airport for hours on end,” said Tasson.

Broughton said things should be back to normal Thursday and flights should be on schedule.
