Dollar bills tell Buddy’s story as owners say goodbye

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — This is the last week a well-known bar in Wrightsville Beach will be open.

It is not your average bar in the town.

“People come back to see their dollars that they’ve left here over the years,” Owner Matt Wiles said.

It is a bar full of dollar bills.

“It’s been a big part of Buddy’s,” Wiles said.

Wiles said each one tells a story starting with the very first.

“My dad was in the bar early one morning sweeping and cleaning up,” Wiles said.

He said a man from Florida walked into the bar, sat down and started talking to his dad.

“He said, ‘Do you mind if I put a dollar up?’ He said, ‘sure, if you want to,'” Wiles said.

Then, Wiles said the man wrote something on the dollar.

“He wrote, ‘Thank goodness for trends,’ and stapled it to the wall,” Wiles said.

Ever since, almost everyone has followed putting their dollar bills on the stairs, the walls, and the ceilings.

“It’s been really cool,” Wiles said.

Each one tells a different story.

“You know, recently, I’ve had people come in and they’re like, ‘I met my husband here, one of the best people I’ve ever met,'” Wiles said.

As Wiles says farewell after 25 years of business, dollars, and stories, he wants everyone to know how much they mean to him.

“I just want to thank everyone for being such great human beings and coming to Buddy’s and being apart of our lives,” Wiles said. “We’re glad we could be part of their lives.”

Buddy’s will be open Thursday and Friday. They will close on Saturday.

Wiles said the new owners are not taking down the dollar bills as far as he knows. He said his family will still be running the Buddy’s in Surf City which opens for the summer in March.
