Coast Guard rescues eight people from sinking charter boat

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — According to a Coast Guard official, crews rescued passengers from a sinking charter boat early Saturday afternoon.

A Wrightsville Beach Coast Guard official said the 38 foot charter boat’s engine caught fire around 12:30 p.m. He said Wrightsville Beach and Oak Island crews responded to the scene and rescued eight people including the captain.

The boat sunk eight miles inland from the Frying Pan Tower. No injuries were reported.
