Cape Fear Roller Girls gear up for season opener

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Cape Fear Roller Girls are rolling out another roller derby season kicking off this Saturday. Wilmington’s only roller derby team has entertained crowds for more than ten seasons and they are ready to skate right to victory.

Kat Davis, a member of the Cape Fear Roller Girls known as “Kat Von D-Linquent”, said they are excited about the season beginning.

“It should be a really exciting season,” said D-Linquent.

And she said they are ready to step up their game.

“We’re looking to move up a little bit in rankings and move up the ladder a little bit,” said D-Linquent.

Michelle Ingraham, a member of the team who goes by the roller derby name of Fiona Fatale, said the team has been skirting around the top 100 rankings and they are ready for a break through.

“I think last year we had a really really fantastic season so I hope we can move that forward this year and just move up in the ranks and bringing our ‘A’ game,” said Fatale.

Perfecting their game isn’t the only goal for the team.

“For every bout we pair up with a different local charity and this one is the Hope Center which is a day center for the homeless it’s a new charity in town,” said D-Linquent. “The local community is very important to us, most of our sponsors are small local business, and we are a non-profit so we just like to give back to the community as well.”

The Cape Fear Roller Girls may get rough on the roller rink but they play nice with community organizations.

Meg Kennelly, a member of the team known as “Notorious M.E.G.”, said getting the chance to give back makes being part of the Cape Fear Roller Girls even better.

“That’s what makes it better than something that you do for fun or a hobby on the side, knowing that your time is actually meaning something and going to special organizations,” said Notorious M.E.G.

You can check out the first bout of the season Saturday at CFCC’s Schwartz Center at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., for more information head to the Cape Fear Roller Girls website.
