ShotSpotter report: Wilmington sees reduction in gun crime
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A new report shows gun crime in Wilmington has been reduced. According to a new ShotSpotter Gunfire Index reported that Wilmington has seen a 2% reduction in gun crime.
According to a release, Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous said more importantly, there has also been a decrease in homicides by 20%.
According to the report, WPD responded to 465 ShotSpotter activations in 2015, up from 414 activations in 2014.
“ShotSpotter technology has made a difference in the way we respond to gun violence in the City of Wilmington,” said Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous. “With the help of this technology we have seen a 20% reduction in homicides during the last year, our response time to shots fired calls has improved and we’ve kept our officers safer.”
Overall, the cities in the Northeast region saw a 27.1 percent decline and those in the West experienced a 22.0 percent drop in gunfire incidents over the same time period.
The annual ShotSpotter 2015 National Gunfire Index is based on data from a statistical sample of U.S. cities using ShotSpotter that had full year deployments in both 2014 and 2015.
