As Azalea Festival draws near locals celebrate with ‘Spring Soiree’

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Spring is just days away and that means the Azalea Festival is coming our way. Friday night a party kicked off the annual event. Festival organizers hosted the Azalea Festival Spring Soiree.

Robby Collins, Azalea Festival president, said the 69th Azalea Festival has a little something for everyone.

“This is the kickoff event for the 2016 Azalea Festival which is our 69th Annual Azalea Festival,” said Collins. “From the big public events like the parade and the street fair to the concerts we are having every night, there’s a lot going on this year.”

But the Henrietta Riverboat will be missing this year.

“The Henrietta has been sold and we are going to bring the queen in probably on a different boat this year and still have her come down the river because we have so much of the festival centered around the river,” said Collins.

While there will be some changes Collins said they try to stick to traditions.

“The Azalea Festival is all about tradition. We uphold them as many as we can; the City is always growing with it and changing so we are rolling with it.”

The Azalea Festival goes from April 6 through 10.
