Wilmington businesses join NC safe bathrooms map opposing HB2
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Dozens of businesses across the state are showing their opposition to House Bill 2 by joining a safe bathroom Google map.
This comes after several equality groups filed a federal lawsuit against the new law. While several state leaders are standing behind it, at least two Wilmington businesses have joined others in opposition.
“Anyone is free to use our bathroom no matter what your gender or sex or preference,” Edge of Urge employee Chamberlain Staub said.
It is called a safe bathroom.
“We don’t have a bathroom at our Wilmington location, but at our Raleigh location, anyone is free to use our bathroom,” Staub said.
Staub said it is not just about the bathroom though.
“Whoever you are, you have a safe place to be without being discriminated against,” Staub said.
Edge of Urge and Tazy’s in Wilmington both joined almost 100 businesses on the safe bathrooms Google map designating businesses in North Carolina who have stated publicly that their bathrooms are safe for trans and gender non-conforming folks under House Bill 2.
“It’s just ignorant I think that people would try to discriminate against others,” Staub said.
As the opposition continues forming and a federal lawsuit is pending, state and federal leaders are also voicing their support of the controversial law.
“All of our lives we’ve all known that, if you’re a female you go to the women’s bathroom, and, if you’re a male, then, you go to the men’s bathroom,” Rep. David Rouzer said. Quite frankly, I don’t for the life of me understand why that should change.”
“That’s a great question, but in view of the pending lawsuit that’s been filed, I’m not making any public comments concerning that,” Rep. Ted Davis said.
UNCW Chancellor Zito Sartarelli also commented on the topic today.
“While we have not determined the full impact the law may have for our campus, what will not change is our long-held commitment to an inclusive environment for our students, faculty, staff and guests,” Sartarelli said.
It is a pending topic that is about more than just bathrooms.
