Local student helps lead national political movement

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY)— Andrew Nixon, Brunswick County Early College High School student, said their effort to organize supporters of Presidential Candidate Donald Trump at the college level began on social media. Now the ‘Students for Trump’ twitter page has more than $25,000 followers. Nixon said his friend from Campbell University started the Students for Trump twitter page and the organization just grew from there reaching college students across the nation.

“It’s amazing to see the amount of support we’ve been getting,” said Nixon. “We have state directors almost in all 50 states and we have 5,000 members and 250 chapters nationwide.”

Nixon serves as the national field director for Students for Trump.

“Really what we are all about is getting students involved and helping the campaign out in whichever way possible and we aren’t affiliated with the campaign but hopefully we’ll get there one day,” said Nixon.

Nixon said their goal is to get a chapter in each college in the country. He said this effort has gotten him some backlash for supporting such a controversial candidate.

“It’s very harsh. I have been facing a lot of backlash from kids at my school. I’ve been called a racist, a white supremacist, and even a member of the KKK and that’s really what our other members are experiencing too,” said Nixon.

Nixon said he doesn’t let the negative comments get to him and he stands strong in his resolve.

“You just have to keep pushing forward, and get through it and keep supporting our candidate,” said Nixon.
