Nearly 2,000 volunteer time to ‘Work on Wilmington’ Saturday

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Saturday marked the 11th Annual Work On Wilmington workday for more than 1,900 volunteers around the community.

Work On Wilmington is a function of Leadership Wilmington, a civic leadership development program of the Wilmington Chamber Foundation.

This annual Spring event was held Saturday with more than 25 projects happening around the county.

Some projects included creating a rooftop event space at the Harrelson Center, a vegetable garden at Lake Forest Academy, painting the Visitor Center at the Battleship North Carolina.

More than 450 GE volunteers helped paint parts of the ship, scrub the deck, and clean the tour route Saturday.

“We have a lot of Navy nuclear veterans that work for GE and so we have a connection that way and there is also GE equipment on the Battleship from the 1940s,” Anne Murray, Project Control Leader at GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy, said.

Organizers say because many hands are collectively working, projects that would take months to accomplish are completed in just four hours.

In the last 6 years, it is estimated that over $130,000 in free labor is provided by the volunteers who participate in Work On Wilmington.
