Man kills himself ending nearly five-hour standoff
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A nearly five-hour standoff is over and a Wilmington man is dead after law enforcement officers responded to a situation involving a man with a gun Wednesday.
Wilmington Police closed a section of S. 3rd Street between Market and Castle streets for about five hours this even while officers negotiated with a man in a home on the 400 block of S. 3rd Street. The road is now back open.
WPD spokeswoman Linda Rawley said that they received a welfare check call this morning at the home, but no one answered the door. Rawley said later this afternoon around 4 p.m., US Marshals attempted to serve a warrant for failure to appear on a 45-year-old man at the home. She said the Marshals then discovered the man barricaded himself in the house. Police said the man later shot and killed himself.
People living nearby who were originally evacuated were allowed to go back into their homes.
