5 hurt in jet ski accident near Sunset Beach; 2 with severe injuries

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WPDE/WWAY) — Sunset Beach firefighters responded to a jet ski accident off Bird Island, which lies in between North and South Carolina.

A witness on scene tells us a group was out in the surf and went up into the rocks. He said several people were taken to the hospital.

F.T. Norton at the StarNews reports at least four jet skis were involved in the accident.

The incident was discovered in the Little River Inlet as rescue crews with the Sunset Beach Fire Department were participating in a water rescue class near Bird Island, said Brunswick County Fire Marshal Scott Garner.

The injured were part of a jet ski tour and were hurt on the rocks in the jetty, Garner said. He said none of the injuries was life threatening, and two of the five people were taken to the hospital.

The Coast Guard and Brunswick County and Horry County fire departments were called in to assist.
