“Souls to the Polls” encourages people to go vote
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Election season is in full swing, with this being the lone Sunday polls are open for early voting. Political activists in Wilmington marched to the polls this afternoon.
“We want to make sure that people come out and your vote really is your voice. It’s our only opportunity to be heard. it just takes 30 seconds and you can change the world,” said Caroline Morin-Gage.
Morin-Gage is part of the NAACP. Their goal is to get everyone out to the polls this season.
That’s why members and other political groups marched to the polling center in downtown Wilmington Sunday.
“This is a right that we need to exercise. I saw a young man this morning who said ‘I only vote for the president.’ It’s important to vote in this mid-year election because we’re electing people for congress, the board of education, county commissioner,” said Deborah Maxwell, who is part of the NAACP.
Maxwell emphasizes that it is your right to vote. The movement “Souls to Polls” pushes people of all ages to get out and vote.
Morin-Gage says the early voting period is going on right now.
“Especially this year when we have constitutional amendments on the ballot and a lot of different positions from judges to school board, there are so many things that affect our everyday lives that we get to determine when we vote,” said Morin-Gage.
Voters will have choices ranging from the school board all the way to who represents us in Washington.
You can register to vote through Saturday. Morin-Gage says you can visit vote411.org to find voting information and a polling center near you.
