71-year-old woman charged with growing ‘special plant’ of pot

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — A 71-year-old Guilford County woman faces drug charges after a deputy found marijuana at her home.

Authorities say Betty Holt Walker had a chest-high marijuana plant, five smaller plants behind a shed, marijuana stems and seeds, and a water bong made from a soda bottle.

Captain Tony Caliendo says Walker told the deputy she found the first plant in her garden and repotted it, calling it a special plant used to keep animals out of her front yard.

Law officers didn't buy the explanation and arrested Walker.

She is due in court September 12th to face charges of manufacturing marijuana and felony possession of marijuana.
