9,000 gallons of oily mixture recovered after kerosene spill in Carolina Beach

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The Town of Carolina Beach says thousands of gallons of oily water mixture was recovered from the canal in Carolina Beach following a kerosene spill last week.

The Carolina Beach Fire Department says it happened around 7:30 Thursday night at the Scotchman on Canal Drive.

Fire crews say a tanker truck was delivering kerosene to underground tanks and as he was filling the tanks, the dispensing unit came out. Between 500 and 600 gallons of kerosene spilled onto the asphalt.

Firefighters managed to stop the fuel from going into the storm drains, but some of the kerosene did spill into the yacht basin.

Councilman Steve Shuttleworth posted on Facebook late Friday that the town has been in touch with the National Response Center and the Coast Guard concerning the spill.

9,000 gallons of oily water mixture was recovered.

“Sorbent boom will remain in place for the next few days,” he posted Friday night. “Coast Guard will be checking on this site periodically over the next few days. The kerosene has broken down enough where remaining sheen is not recoverable.”
