911 dispatcher charged with street racing

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — One of three men charged in a Friday night street race is a New Hanover County 911 dispatcher.

William Rogers faces charges of misdemeanor spontaneous speed competition and reckless and careless driving, according to New Hanover County spokesperson Charles Smith. The charges come after Rogers and two other men allegedly challenged each other to a race on 17th Street.

Smith says Rogers was hired by the county in October 2010. Smith says Rogers will not be disciplined by the county in connection to the charges, because they are misdemeanor infractions.

Two other men, Joshua Cramer and Nicholas Stentiford, are also facing charges in the case.

Cramer’s car veered off the road and struck a tree, leaving him with critical injuries. The StarNews is reporting his condition has been upgraded from critical to stable condition at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
