911 logs: Girl bitten on leg by shark at Bald Head Island

BALD HEAD ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — It’s believed a young shark bit a young girl at Bald Head Island over the weekend.

Bald Head Island Village Manager Chris McCall says it happened near Beach Access 42 around 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

McCall says first responders believe it was a shark based on the type of wound. According to the 911 logs, the young girl was bitten on her calf.

The logs state the victim was brought back to the beach access on a surf board.

The bite was not life-threatening.

Brunswick County dispatchers released 911 calls Monday made by people who witnessed the accident. One caller tells 911 that they have the girl wrapped in a towel and are taking her off the beach.

“I work on the beach here as a surf instructor, so I just saw it happen,” the caller tells dispatch. “She was on the sandbar and she screamed and her dad automatically picked her up.”

The girl was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center to be treated for her injuries.

McCall says because of the victim’s age, they can’t release the victim’s name or any other details.
