93-year-old sworn in as Commandant of local Marine Corps League
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Tuesday was a special night for the Cape Fear Detachment of the Marine Corps League.
The monthly meeting included the swearing in of 93-year-old Bob Ochs as the Detachment’s 2017 Commandant.
Ochs served in the Pacific during World War II and has stayed in shape, both mentally and physically, all his life.
“I joined the Marine Corps in 1942, and I went in the Pacific in 1943 and stayed out there for two and half years until the war was over,” Ochs said.
The organization said Ochs is the oldest Detachment Commandant in Marine Corps League history.
“Well my duties is to keep this detachment organized, get new programs going, get new membership, and have the community recognize what a great outfit we are,” Ochs said.
Several new board members were also sworn in on Tuesday night alongside Ochs. State Marine Corps League officers officiated the ceremony.
All area marines and FMF Navy Corpsmen are invited to join the local Detachment. The organization meets on the first Tuesday of each month.
