TOWSON, MD (UNCW) -– Sophomore defender Madison Melnick’s first career goal with under five minutes remaining lifted UNCW past Towson, 2-1, in a Colonial Athletic Association women’s soccer matinee Friday at the Tiger Soccer Complex.
Playing the first leg in a two-game weekend swing, the Seahawks won their second in a row and boosted their record to 7-6-1 overall and 2-3-0 in the CAA. The Tigers were tagged with their fourth straight loss and plummeted to 3-8-2 and 0-4-0.
The Seahawks raised their domination over the Tigers to 12-2 in 14 matchups, including three straight wins in the series. The result was identical to last year’s final in Wilmington.
“This was another classic battle with Towson,” said a delighted Paul Cairney, UNCW’s veteran coach. “It seems that every time we play Towson, it’s a tight game. They are a very good team and play with tremendous energy at home. Coach (Greg) Paynter also has his team ready to play.
“We played well for long spells today and we will build on that. I’m happy for our team since they worked hard for those three points. We will now simply shift our focus to the next game at JMU.”
With the score knotted at 1-all and time winding down, Melnick, from Mason, Ohio, cradled a deflected shot by Maddie McCormick and beat senior goalkeeper Erin Quinn of Towson for the game-winner at 85:37. It was the first goal for the transfer from the University of Cincinnati.
UNCW junior striker Katrina Guillou, playing close to her hometown of Ft. Washington, Md., broke open an early stalemate with her team-leading seventh goal of the season at the 23:26 mark of the first period.
After UNCW took the slim 1-0 into intermission, the lead dissolved quickly when Towson’s Katlyn Axenfeld scored for the first time in 2014 with an unassisted goal just 57 seconds into the second period to knot the score at 1-all.
UNCW heads over to Harrisonburg, Va., for its next test, a 1 p.m. date Sunday with James Madison at University Park.
GAME NOTES: Towson built a 16-14 advantage in shots over UNCW…Guillou led the Seahawks with four attempts…Sophomore Liisa Rahkola played all 90 minutes in goal for the Seahawks, registering four saves…Each team had six corner kicks…Axenfeld also scored Towson’s goal in UNCW’s 2-1 victory last season at the UNCW Soccer Stadium…Guillou took over sole possession of the team scoring lead with her seventh goal and 16 points on the season.
