SCAM ALERT: Be wary of call claiming you can settle warrant with payment

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office says it has taken several reports lately about a phone scam trying to get people to pay off an outstanding warrant.

Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Jerry Brewer says according to the complaints, scammers call and claim the victim has an outstanding warrant. The caller then tells the victim they can take care of the warrant by making a payment through PayPal.

Brewer says the Sheriff’s Office would never contact anyone about paying off a warrant by phone. He says if you have any questions about a call like this, you can always contact the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office at (910) 798-4162.
