Dogfish Tournament held in Wrightsville Beach Saturday

WRIGHTSVILLE, BEACH (WWAY) — Have you ever caught a dogfish before? That is what several anglers were doing Saturday for the top cash prize in 10th Annual Dogfish Tournament in Wrightsville beach.

In case you don’t know what a dogfish is, it’s a type of shark that can have a spiny or smooth back.

On Saturday, the weather conditions were cold and windy along the beaches, but about 100 anglers still participated in the catch and release event.

We asked one man what his favorite fish was and his answer might be similar to yours.

“My favorite fish is the next one I catch, so it doesn’t matter which one it’s going to be the next one,” said Al Baird. He is the Founder of North Carolina Fishing Pier Society

Baird said this is also a great social event for everyone to get together, have a good time, and just fish.

The heaviest fish weighed over 10 pounds.
