RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Technology giant IBM’s top North Carolina executive is telling state lawmakers and Gov. Pat McCrory the corporation strongly opposes the Religious Freedom Restoration bill.
Supporters of the bill say it protects religious convictions. Opponents worry it allows discrimination against gays and lesbians.
IBM executive Robert Greenberg says the company which employs thousands at its Research Triangle Park campus and more statewide is worried if the bill becomes law it would enable discrimination based on sexual identity.
McCrory spokesman Josh Ellis did not respond to requests for comment.
Supporters say the legislation would protect business owners or individuals against laws requiring them to act in ways contrary to their religious beliefs. Opponents say the measure would amount to legalizing discrimination.
The bill was introduced last month and is in a committee.
