School, Silver Lake homes under boil water advisory after water main break

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — An early-morning water main break means some CFPUA customers, including a school, in the Silver Lake area of New Hanover County woke up without water.

CFPUA crews are repairing the break, which they say happened near Lorraine Circle involving a nearly 40-year-old water main. A CFPUA spokesman says residents in the Silver Lake and Silva Terra areas between Silver Lake Road and Antoinette Drive will not have water until the break is repaired.

The spokesman says about 800 customers are impacted by the outage, and a boil water advisory is also in effect until crews complete the repair. Mary C. Williams Elementary School was included in the addresses affected initially, but crews say water was running again at the school just before 8 a.m.

According to district spokeswoman Valita Quattlebaum, New Hanover County Schools Child Nutrition Department has sent over bottled water for the school’s use. In addition, the cafeteria staff is boiling water for use in lunch preparation. The school’s water fountains have been shut off. Marcy C. Williams Principal Amy Oots sent a call to parents informing them of the situation with the water. Quattlebaum says the school is managing the situaiton and operating as normal. Dismissal will not be impacted and will occur as normal at 2:30 p.m.
Crews say water main break repairs typically take an average of 4 to 8 hours.
