16th annual Community Stand Down shows successful trend
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – Dozens of homeless veterans got help from local vendors, VA representatives, and medical professionals at the 16th annual community stand down’ today at the VFW on Carolina Beach Road.
Event organizers says veterans and any homeless persons were invited for free meals, health screenings, and information on how to get benefits.
First vice chair of the New Hanover County Veterans Council Walker O. Biggs says over the years they have seen less homeless people coming to their events. He says that is showing a successful trend for them.
Air Force veteran Henry Hildebrent is an example of one of those success stories. Hildebrent says he got back on his feet through this kind of event and recommends others to reach out for help.
“Do the community outreach thing,” Hildebrent said. “You will find somebody that way and it worked for me and I think as long as that’s happening and as long as people aren’t afraid to do it, it can only get better. Some of these people have given life and limb literally and shouldn’t be forced to live under a bridge or out in a street.”
Event organizers say if you couldn’t make it to this event, contact your local veterans service organizations to find out how you can get help or benefits.
