Both sides of Confederate debate pressure McCrory to act
RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Debate over the appropriateness of Confederate symbols continues to rage in North Carolina this week, but it remains to be seen how Gov. Pat McCrory will respond to pressure to act coming from both sides.
On Thursday, advocacy groups delivered a petition with more than 13,000 signatures to the governor’s office, urging McCrory to use his executive authority to halt the sale of vanity license plates bearing the Confederate Flag.
At the same time, a bill protecting historical monuments – including an unknown number of Confederate memorials – awaits McCrory’s signature after passing the House on Tuesday.
McCrory thinks the law requires the legislature to approve ending sales of the plates. His office declined to comment on whether he will sign the monuments bill.
