Severe weather causes flooding and damage in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Strong winds and heavy rains are causing damage and flooding across the area.  Water street began flooding around 5pm, forcing police to start directing traffic.  Standing water also made getting onto the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge from Front Street difficult for drivers.

The Wilmington Fire Department is also reporting damage at a couple of buildings.  They say a tree fell on Colonial Parke apartments off New Centre Drive.  No one got hurt, but residents in the affected building will not be able to stay there tonight.

Assistant Fire Chief, Jon Mason, says they’ve received reports that part of the roof was blown off Builders FirstSource on Market Street.  He says there’s also reports of structural damage to the building.  No one was hurt.

Several trees are down across the area and power is also out for some residents.

We’ll have much more on this storm and damage coming up tonight on WWAY at 11pm.
