Carolinas National Guard units train together at Fort Bragg

FORT BRAGG, NC (AP) — National Guard units from South Carolina and North Carolina will train together at Fort Bragg this weekend.

The Fayetteville Observer reported about 900 troops will participate. The soldiers will be using dozens of helicopters, transport planes and rocket systems.

Regular Army soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division and the 3rd Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg will participate.

The North Carolina National Guard said the training known as “Carolina Thunder” is the largest exercise planned for local Guard troops this year.

Most of the training will be at Fort Bragg, but an air assault is planned at the Stanly County Airport, about 70 miles west of Fort Bragg.

Last year’s Carolina Thunder was held at McEntire Joint National Guard Base east of Columbia, South Carolina.
